Reinterpretation of Chief Satouriona and his Wife Going For a Walk
The mission of theTimucua Art Contest is to create excitement and interest in presenting a more authentic portrayal of the
scenes depicted in the the classic Le Moyne/de Bry works, published in 1591, which up to now have served as our collective
memory of Timucua culture. Public Trust believes the enhancement of the Le Moyne/de Bry works -- realistically
reinterpreted by today's skilled artists and made more historically accurate by modern scholarship -- will be a significant
contribution to our understanding of the Timucua. Public Trust seeks to identify up to 10 skilled artists to paint the
new and improved reinterpretations of the original Le Moyne/de Bry works. The contest further underscores the respect we have
for our land's ancestors.
Celeste Nagy (one of the ten winning artists) will be paid a $2,500 commission
to reinterpret the original Le Moyne/de Bry work. The new painting will be shown with the original Le Moyne/de
Bry work at two premier art galleries in Jacksonville. The art work will also be featured in a full color descriptive
book to be published about this project to enhance the artistic history of the Timucua.
The
chief wears a painted deerskin and is followed by an attendant to hold his train. The chief and his wife are tattooed and
have blue painted around their mouths. They wear red ornaments made from fish bladders in their ears and have sharpened their
nails like animal claws.

Another Latest Work In Progress
I composed
this portrait using 4 different photographs. Two of the photos were from our island cruise about 5 years ago.
Thats where I got the background; we stood in front of a photo of the Titanic. My husband's pose is from the same
cruise photo, but mine isn't. My dress and pose are from a wedding magazine. But if I could have had
a traditional wedding dress, this is the style I would have had.
If you didn't have a traditional wedding
(with the works) but always wished you had, maybe I could compose a portrait for you too.

Wedding Portrait
This 18" X 24" Portrait was painted
from another wedding magazine photo. I guess everyone can tell I like wedding dresses. She looks a little lonely
though. I think from now on I should have at least two people in a wedding portrait. After all, the special day
isn't only for the bride.

Giorgio
This 24" X 30" portrait of Giorgio was also painted from a photograph. Giorgio's of Palm Beach is the internationally famous maker of the largest
collection of alligator and ostrich handbags, shoes, furniture and accessories in the world. He was also my husbands
friend, so I painted his portrait and gave it to him. I hope he chose to hang it somewhere.

LIttle Blue Girl
This was an 8" x 10" oil on canvas
that I painted many years ago for a co-worker. I have moved on from that job, but I still would like to know how the
little girl is doing and how the co-worker who commissioned the painting is doing too. I think I painted it for
$20. I could charge $20 then, because I was working a full time job at the time.
